Jaheim - Ghetto Love

Very underrated album that more people should give a chance and listen to.  The 3 big hits off this album were "Could It Be", "Just In Case", and "Anything".  The album as a whole is pretty solid.  His albums afterwards don't match up and Jaheim himself is starting to fade off the scene, but I can vouch for the quality of this album.

This Can't Be Good For San Francisco

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/08/16/49ers.alex.smith.ap/index.html?sct=nfl_t2_a6

This can't be good for the Niners.  According to the above article from Sports Illustrated Alex Smith is starting to create separation in the QB race.  Guess it will be another hurtful season for all Niner fans.  I also see why they were taking a look at Daunte Culpepper.  It also could be that Harbaugh doesn't want to stick his rookie QB behind that swiss cheese offensive line and risk crushing their future.

More Smooth Music To Sip Cognac To

The Analyst and Experts don't know a thing

ESPN yesterday reported that Aaron Maybin was released by the Buffalo Bills.  This supposed pass rusher out of Penn State in 2 seasons had 0 sacks.  He was praised and hailed coming out of college as a safe and can't miss pick.  Vernon Gholston is another 1st round pick (He was actually Top 5), that never panned out and not sure where in the world he is at right now.  It's funny the logic some of these guys use to say that this player is better than this one, and they love to bring up all kinds of stats and analyze little small details to say this player will be successful or a failure.  The same goes for the NBA draft.  (How Rondo slid down to the 18th pick is a mystery to me.)  I remember hearing Todd McShay calling Josh Freeman a "reach" with the #18 pick because he didn't know how to read defenses and constantly made poor decisions at Kansas St.  Well out of Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Freeman which QB would you want right now.

I remember reading an article about John Calipari and the 1996 draft when he was the head coach of the New Jersey Nets.  Through all the workouts he fell in love with Kobe Bryants talent and felt that he was the player to draft that year.  He fell victim to the perspective of other GMs and supposed draft experts that it was better to "take an accomplished and proven player in Kerry Kittles than an unknown in Kobe Bryant".  Well we know the outcome of this decision.

At the end of the day here is my take on all drafts (including fantasy):

  • There really is no exact science:  I have found myself too in recent years looking at analysis on players and watching preseason games.  Experts and analysts can talk you out of a player that you really like and give you all kinds of numbers as to why they are not good.  The draft does require a lot of luck.  You do have GMs and personnel departments that are great at picking talent (The Marlins seem good at finding young talent), but even some of those GMs will admit that there is a good bit of luck involved.
  • Some franchises are just better at player development:  Some teams simply are just better at developing and utilizing talent more than others.  What seemed like a bust in Calvin Pace in Arizona turned out to be a pretty good player with the Jets.  Arizona also drafted Thomas Jones and Garrison Hearst and they turn out to have better careers else where.  A top 5 player going to a team with no talent (reason why their drafting in that position) will struggle while a player taken later in that draft will go to a team rich with talent and good talent to help mold and develop that player.
I know it can be tempting to listen to these analysts, experts, and pundits.  But remember, these were the same guys that said the Giants had absolutely no chance against the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

SEC doesn't extend an invitation to A&M

ESPN reports that the SEC will not extend an invitation to Texas A&M but will keep the option to add them in the future.  Now Texas A&M has to go back to the Big 12 with their tails between their legs.  Bet their face is red right now.

Potential Breakout Players for the 2011 Season

Stevie Johnson (Buffalo Bills):  After a great end to his 2010 and the departure of Lee Evans to the Ravens now he is the #1 guy.  However he could see more double coverage if the Bills don't establish a viable #2 receiver to go with him.

Steve Breaston (Kansas City Chiefs):  Being reunited with his old coach in Todd Haley could be beneficial for Breaston.  He was hurt most of last year so he will be looking to bounce back with a more productive 2011 campaign.

CJ Spiller (Buffalo Bills):  Hopefully Chan Gailey knows what to do with him and maybe he can have more chances in the offense.

Rashad Jennings (Jacksonville Jaguars):  MJD will probably get less touches this year to help get him through the season healthy.  Which means Jennings will get more opportunities.

John Beck (Washington Redskins):  I'm just kidding but it's possible.

Early Doucet (Arizona Cardinals):  With a new QB and Larry Fitzgerald attracting double coverage he will get his chance.

Tim Hightower (Washington Redskins):  Mike Shanahan maybe overrated as a QB guru, but his system seems to be very running back friendly.

Sorry 4 The Wait Mixtape

This is a mixtape I recommend getting while you wait for The Carter IV to be released on Aug 29th.  Lil' Wayne rips it on this album and should provide Wayne fans something to listen to while they wait.  The lyrics on the mixtape were mostly humorous and light hearted to me.  I've been bumping it for the past two weeks.  My favorite tracks off the mixtape are Tunechi's Back, Rollin', Gucci Gucci, Sure Thing, Racks, and Inkredible.

Review of the Roots "Things Fall Apart" Album

This was a great album that people tend to forget about.  Some of the more played hits off the album were "You Got Me" with Erykah Badu and "The Next Movement".  The album as a whole was great.  This album is a break from the more materialistic themes that many hip hop albums push to the masses.  This album is more soulful and has a more introspective theme.  The album also takes a shot at some of the more commercial acts with "You Ain't Saying Nothing New".  It's an album that came out over 10 years ago, but it is an album that anybody should include in their collection.

Watch The Throne

MTV Review

The link above will take you to the MTV review of the anticipated album from Jay and Kanye.  I have listened to the album for about a day now and so far my take on it is that it is a good album, but I won't necessarily call it an all-time great album that it was billed as.  I would say the album is worth the purchase though.  So far my favorite tracks off the album are Why I Love You So, Who Gon Stop Me, N****s In Paris, and New Day. (No particular order)  I would definitely say a top 3 album this year if not the best album this year.

Albums I Am Most Anxiously Awaiting

  1. Detox:  It's been over 10 years since Chronic 2001.  This album was supposed to come out 8 years ago and I've been anxiously awaiting since.  Every now and then you hear a supposed leaked track from the album and you think the album is right around the corner then nothing for like 2 years.
  2. Final Outkast album:  Supposedly their next album is supposed to be their last, but I seriously hope not.  They are supposed to be getting back with Organized Noise and are tirelessly working on this album so I hope it turns into a classic.
  3. J. Cole's debut album:  Been hearing nothing but mixtapes for the past two years.  I've been calling him the best new rapper for about a year and pray that he doesn't let me down when he finally drops his album.
  4. A Mase album:  Hey!  Harlem World was good.  Hopefully he can drop another album somewhat decent.
  5. A decent Dru Hill album:  Since Enter The Dru you had Dru World Order (fail) and InDrupendence Day (bigger fail)
  6. A Goodie Mob album:  I know Cee-Lo done blew up, but is it too much to ask for just one more album from the group

Artist to look out for
