A look back on my potential breakout players of 2011

There are still a few weeks left in the NFL season, but to humor myself I took the time to look at players I said would have a breakout year.  Here are the players and the original comments I made earlier:

Stevie Johnson (Buffalo Bills):  After a great end to his 2010 and the departure of Lee Evans to the Ravens now he is the #1 guy.  However he could see more double coverage if the Bills don't establish a viable #2 receiver to go with him.
Well the whole Bills offense had a breakthrough season.  His teammate Fred Jackson truly had the breakout season until he got hurt.  Stevie Johnson didn't have a bad season, but I expected more off the chart numbers.

Steve Breaston (Kansas City Chiefs):  Being reunited with his old coach in Todd Haley could be beneficial for Breaston.  He was hurt most of last year so he will be looking to bounce back with a more productive 2011 campaign.
The whole Chiefs team was a disappointment.  Numerous injuries to key players were probably a cause to the Chiefs anemic offense.  All the injuries did give a shot to running back Battle.  But he isn't who I picked to have a breakout year.

CJ Spiller (Buffalo Bills):  Hopefully Chan Gailey knows what to do with him and maybe he can have more chances in the offense.
Well with Fred Jackson hurt now Spiller gets a chance.  We'll see at the end of the year.

Rashad Jennings (Jacksonville Jaguars):  MJD will probably get less touches this year to help get him through the season healthy.  Which means Jennings will get more opportunities.
Fail.  No other comments are necessary.

John Beck (Washington Redskins):  I'm just kidding but it's possible.
Another absolute fail.  What was I smoking?

Early Doucet (Arizona Cardinals):  With a new QB and Larry Fitzgerald attracting double coverage he will get his chance.
Had a decent year.  This year was a struggle for everyone on the Cardinals team.

Tim Hightower (Washington Redskins):  Mike Shanahan maybe overrated as a QB guru, but his system seems to be very running back friendly.
I did get it somewhat right with Hightower.  He was having a great season until he had an injury that took him out for the year.  Which led the way for another player to have a breakout season.  (Roy Helu)

Where Is The Love In R&B Music

This is a good article on CNN.  They usually don't make music like they did in the 70s or 80s or 90s.  Almost like it isn't cool anymore to make those types of songs.

Beck to start for Redskins

Source: Redskins to start Beck at quarterback

I'm not a Redskins fan, and definitely not a fan of Rex Grossman, but I think Grossman deserves another shot.  Shouldn't bench the guy cause of a bad start.  This will probably be the beginning of the slide for the Redskins.

Teams That Need To Draft A Quarterback in 2012

  1. Miami Dolphins - Team needs a total overhaul.  Might as well start with a QB.
  2. New York Jets - Mark Sanchez is just plain awful
  3. Minnesota Vikings - McNabb doesn't seem to be the answer.  Christian Ponder isn't either.
  4. Chicago Bears - Jay Cutler will retire this year after the beating he's received.
  5. Washington Redskins - Rex Grossman, John Beck, nuff said.
  6. Dallas Cowboys - Jerry Jones can't take 4th quarter or December collapses for too long.
  7. Kansas City Chiefs - Need to stop fooling around with this Cassell guy and get something that resembles a quarterback.

Looks Like The Raiders Mean Business

Raiders acquire QB Palmer from Bengals

Last week they acquire Aaron Curry.  Now they acquire Carson Palmer.  Only time will tell if these moves work.  Both players come in with a chip on their shoulder.  Some people say this is too steep for Carson.  I think it might turn out well for them.

R Kelly - Step In The Name Of Love

Owner Al Davis dies at 82

Today the NFL has received devastating news with the passing of one of the pioneers and visionaries in Al Davis.  People look over the past five years and have lobbed criticism toward the man, but the NFL wouldn't be the league it is now if not for some of his contributions.  Davis was the person who oversaw the merger of the AFL with the NFL.  He has probably done more for African-Americans in the NFL than most other owners.  He gave great coaches their start when a lot of people thought he was crazy (John Madden, Art Shell, Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden to name a few).  Even though he has had some notable and public breakups with few individuals in Marcus Allen, Mike Shanahan, and Jon Gruden, the majority of his former and current players love the man and defend him to the end.

Al Davis had a great mind and was loyal to his players and coaches.  His contributions to the game have been many, and it is rare to find a person who is not afraid to go against the norm and do things his way despite the naysayers.

Week 2 NFL MVP Candidates

I did my preseason NFL MVP candidates and now I want to revisit that and either add or subtract from that list.
  • Peyton Manning (If healthy) - For obvious reasons, Peyton will be removed from this list.
  • Tom Brady - Right now he looks like the leading candidate for league MVP.  Over 900 yards after the first 2 weeks.
  • Michael Vick - Vick means a lot to his team's success and will rise or fall based on his play.
  • Philip Rivers - With the numbers he puts up he is always in consideration.
  • Matt Ryan - He maybe falling down the list a little bit, but his teammate may have worked his way on the list.
  • Michael Turner - The team seems to succeed based on the number of touches he receives either running or receiving the ball.
  • Ray Rice - Explanation similar to Michael Turner
  • Adrian Petersen - The only good thing going on in Minnesota right now.
  • Darren McFadden  - Raiders look like an actual team right now and he's a big part of the reason.
  • Arian Foster - So far injured
  • Aaron Rodgers - Probably up there with Brady on this list with the way he is performing.
  • Drew Brees - Probably should have been on the original list.  So far he's having an MVP caliber season.
  • Cam Newton - Forget offensive rookie of the year.  I'm putting him on this list.
  • Calvin Johnson - Him and his teammate who also is having a great season so far are putting up great numbers
  • Matthew Stafford - If he keeps this up and stays healthy then he has a great chance of winning MVP.
Blue - Additions to the list
Red - Subtractions.

Top 5 apps for rooted Android phones

These are the apps that I have found useful since rooting my android phone.  These are apps that I believe are a must.

Open Garden WiFi Tether:  Probably the main reason anybody would want to root their android phone.  This gives you the ability to tether your device for free.

ROM Manager:  This is a simple ROM manager that gives the user the ability to flash ROMs and themes easily.  I also use Droid 2 Bootstrapper, but this is a good app if you are just starting out rooting.

Titanium Backup:  This app gives the user the ability to backup all the users apps and settings.  Nuff said.

Root Explorer:  This is a file manager system that can give you access to the root of your phone.

Superuser:  When I rooted my phone this came installed on it.  This app gives superuser rights that you usually wouldn't have.

Miles Davis - Quiet Nights

A nice smooth album to sip some cognac to.

My Top 5 Android Apps

These are my favorite android apps that I use regularly:

Scoremobile:  If you are a big sports fan then this is an app that I highly recommend.  When I had a blackberry it was a favorite app of mine and was extremely happy when it finally came to Android.  I have used ESPN Scorecenter, Live Score, and Sports Tap, but those apps didn't have all the info I wanted or they were a battery hog.

Google+:  This is a social media app by Google that is currently in beta.  I like that you can utilize Circles to keep your friends, family, or work life separate and not combined into one whole universe.  So now you can just send updates to a select few or to the whole universe if you want.

Poynt:  Another app that I used a lot when I had a blackberry and was happy when it finally came to Android.  You can find out what stores, restaurants, parks, etc is around you.  You can find out where the cheapest gas is around you, and you can find out movie times at theaters around you.  It is an extremely useful app if you travel a lot or move to a new area.

Google Maps:  It is a navigation app that like Poynt you can explore what is around you.  However if you have a specific address or destination then you can plug it in and receive directions for it.  The app can be integrated with Poynt or other apps on your phone.

Pulse:  If you are a person who likes to keep up with the news then this is a pretty good app with a nice interface.  It has a vast number of RSS feeds you can subscribe to or if you have a google reader account you can pull some of your feeds from there.

Jaheim - Ghetto Love

Very underrated album that more people should give a chance and listen to.  The 3 big hits off this album were "Could It Be", "Just In Case", and "Anything".  The album as a whole is pretty solid.  His albums afterwards don't match up and Jaheim himself is starting to fade off the scene, but I can vouch for the quality of this album.

This Can't Be Good For San Francisco

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/08/16/49ers.alex.smith.ap/index.html?sct=nfl_t2_a6

This can't be good for the Niners.  According to the above article from Sports Illustrated Alex Smith is starting to create separation in the QB race.  Guess it will be another hurtful season for all Niner fans.  I also see why they were taking a look at Daunte Culpepper.  It also could be that Harbaugh doesn't want to stick his rookie QB behind that swiss cheese offensive line and risk crushing their future.

More Smooth Music To Sip Cognac To

The Analyst and Experts don't know a thing

ESPN yesterday reported that Aaron Maybin was released by the Buffalo Bills.  This supposed pass rusher out of Penn State in 2 seasons had 0 sacks.  He was praised and hailed coming out of college as a safe and can't miss pick.  Vernon Gholston is another 1st round pick (He was actually Top 5), that never panned out and not sure where in the world he is at right now.  It's funny the logic some of these guys use to say that this player is better than this one, and they love to bring up all kinds of stats and analyze little small details to say this player will be successful or a failure.  The same goes for the NBA draft.  (How Rondo slid down to the 18th pick is a mystery to me.)  I remember hearing Todd McShay calling Josh Freeman a "reach" with the #18 pick because he didn't know how to read defenses and constantly made poor decisions at Kansas St.  Well out of Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Freeman which QB would you want right now.

I remember reading an article about John Calipari and the 1996 draft when he was the head coach of the New Jersey Nets.  Through all the workouts he fell in love with Kobe Bryants talent and felt that he was the player to draft that year.  He fell victim to the perspective of other GMs and supposed draft experts that it was better to "take an accomplished and proven player in Kerry Kittles than an unknown in Kobe Bryant".  Well we know the outcome of this decision.

At the end of the day here is my take on all drafts (including fantasy):

  • There really is no exact science:  I have found myself too in recent years looking at analysis on players and watching preseason games.  Experts and analysts can talk you out of a player that you really like and give you all kinds of numbers as to why they are not good.  The draft does require a lot of luck.  You do have GMs and personnel departments that are great at picking talent (The Marlins seem good at finding young talent), but even some of those GMs will admit that there is a good bit of luck involved.
  • Some franchises are just better at player development:  Some teams simply are just better at developing and utilizing talent more than others.  What seemed like a bust in Calvin Pace in Arizona turned out to be a pretty good player with the Jets.  Arizona also drafted Thomas Jones and Garrison Hearst and they turn out to have better careers else where.  A top 5 player going to a team with no talent (reason why their drafting in that position) will struggle while a player taken later in that draft will go to a team rich with talent and good talent to help mold and develop that player.
I know it can be tempting to listen to these analysts, experts, and pundits.  But remember, these were the same guys that said the Giants had absolutely no chance against the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

SEC doesn't extend an invitation to A&M

ESPN reports that the SEC will not extend an invitation to Texas A&M but will keep the option to add them in the future.  Now Texas A&M has to go back to the Big 12 with their tails between their legs.  Bet their face is red right now.

Sorry 4 The Wait Mixtape

This is a mixtape I recommend getting while you wait for The Carter IV to be released on Aug 29th.  Lil' Wayne rips it on this album and should provide Wayne fans something to listen to while they wait.  The lyrics on the mixtape were mostly humorous and light hearted to me.  I've been bumping it for the past two weeks.  My favorite tracks off the mixtape are Tunechi's Back, Rollin', Gucci Gucci, Sure Thing, Racks, and Inkredible.

Review of the Roots "Things Fall Apart" Album

This was a great album that people tend to forget about.  Some of the more played hits off the album were "You Got Me" with Erykah Badu and "The Next Movement".  The album as a whole was great.  This album is a break from the more materialistic themes that many hip hop albums push to the masses.  This album is more soulful and has a more introspective theme.  The album also takes a shot at some of the more commercial acts with "You Ain't Saying Nothing New".  It's an album that came out over 10 years ago, but it is an album that anybody should include in their collection.

MTV Review

The link above will take you to the MTV review of the anticipated album from Jay and Kanye.  I have listened to the album for about a day now and so far my take on it is that it is a good album, but I won't necessarily call it an all-time great album that it was billed as.  I would say the album is worth the purchase though.  So far my favorite tracks off the album are Why I Love You So, Who Gon Stop Me, N****s In Paris, and New Day. (No particular order)  I would definitely say a top 3 album this year if not the best album this year.

Albums I Am Most Anxiously Awaiting

  1. Detox:  It's been over 10 years since Chronic 2001.  This album was supposed to come out 8 years ago and I've been anxiously awaiting since.  Every now and then you hear a supposed leaked track from the album and you think the album is right around the corner then nothing for like 2 years.
  2. Final Outkast album:  Supposedly their next album is supposed to be their last, but I seriously hope not.  They are supposed to be getting back with Organized Noise and are tirelessly working on this album so I hope it turns into a classic.
  3. J. Cole's debut album:  Been hearing nothing but mixtapes for the past two years.  I've been calling him the best new rapper for about a year and pray that he doesn't let me down when he finally drops his album.
  4. A Mase album:  Hey!  Harlem World was good.  Hopefully he can drop another album somewhat decent.
  5. A decent Dru Hill album:  Since Enter The Dru you had Dru World Order (fail) and InDrupendence Day (bigger fail)
  6. A Goodie Mob album:  I know Cee-Lo done blew up, but is it too much to ask for just one more album from the group

Underrated R&B groups from the past 20 years

  • Mint Condition - Had some great hits and really didn't get the recognition or promotions that they deserved.
  • Brownstone - Girls could sing but faded off the scene after their first album.
  • Changing Faces - Even though they recorded more albums than Brownstown they had a similar career.
  • After 7 - A good group but people don't remember them until you play one of their songs.
  • Jade - Had one album but probably was talented enough to do a few more.
  • Next - Had a few hits but outside of RL couldn't really make it big.
Who are some of the groups of the past 20 years you believe were good but overlooked?
